Ducky Derby Day Stays Afloat!

Ho-Ho-Kus’s Ducky Derby Day was definitely a day for the ducks. Wet weather dampened everything but the spirit that Ducky Derby Day seems to bring out in everyone in Ho-Ho-Kus. After a wet start, the sun came out and so did most of the Borough’s residents. All enjoyed food, games and rides. The “Mighty Ho-Ho-Kus Brook” was indeed very might that day. The brook was running so high that the derby had to be relocated. The DPW put together a make shift pond in the Borough square where Mayor Randall jumped in, stirred the ducks thoroughly and plucked 15 winners from the waters. When the ducks made their splash, many smiles and duck calls could be heard from around the pond.

The “Borough Stage” was a huge success. Everyone enjoyed The Tap Hatters, a local group of senior women who tap-danced and sung their way into our hearts. Next up was the Saddle River Valley Concert Band. This group of talented musicians played for an hour to a crowd of people mesmerized by their music. Following the band was Snakes and Scales, a reptile animal show. Many of the kids got involved in the show through this hands-on demonstration. At 6pm the mayor announced the 15 winners of the Derby to a crowd cheering with every name called.

All in all, Ho-Ho-Kus Ducky Derby Day has become an event that is highly anticipated. The people have embraced it, and for that reason you will be seeing it annually for years to come!
